Diet

Lipids or fats, why they are necessary

Fat  is found under the skin, serving as an energy reserve, producing more than twice the energy released by  proteins and carbohydrates . It also acts as insulation against the cold and forms a support tissue for many organs, protecting them at the same time from blows, as occurs with the kidneys.

Fats or lipids help make food more pleasant, since their presence in meals is essential to be able to appreciate the aroma and taste of different foods, also helping the feeling of satiety that we have when we eat it.

On the other hand, one gram of fat provides 9 calories, compared to the 4 calories per gram provided by carbohydrates or proteins. It is important to know that when you start exercising you obtain energy from carbohydrates, while after 20 minutes you begin to burn fats , since they are what our body uses then.

Fat is essential for health, which is why it should always be included in any diet in adequate quantities, as excessive consumption can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular problems such as a heart attack , a stroke or increasing blood cholesterol levels, which which is known as arteriosclerosis.

Lipid requirement in the diet

In general, the term ‘ fat ‘ has negative connotations for health, as it is usually associated with an obesity problem . However, nutritionists know that fat is an essential nutrient for the proper functioning of the body and is necessary just like carbohydrates, proteins or carbohydrates.

The requirements for lipid intake depend on the age and of course the person’s daily activity level:

  • In general, in adults over 19 years of age, its consumption should provide approximately 25-30% of the total energy of the diet, without exceeding 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day; the same figures are necessary in older adults.
  • In the case of children, things vary, from 50% of the daily consumption of babies who are fed breast milk, which is very rich in fat, to 40% of the daily calories needed by children and adolescents .
  • Pregnant women should consume 30% fat daily for the proper development of the fetus.

It is important that we keep in mind that these percentages are 10% below what the Spanish population usually consumes.
